If we assume the above statement to be true, then everything around and within us is energy – the paper of the book you’re reading, the chair you’re sitting on, and even your thoughts as you read, absorb and comprehend the meaning of these words. As I wrote three years ago in my notes on Swami Chinmayananda’s A Manual of Self Unfoldment that I was studying at the time, ‘We are actually just energy packets with space in between.’ On one hand, this seems extremely complex and esoteric, and on the other, it is a beautifully simple truth.

If we are all energy, we have to be further classified and sub-divided into positive and negative energy. For instance, when we feel anger or jealously, we radiate negative energy and when we are at peace, feeling calm, joy and love, we send out waves of positivity.

I used to think this was all humbug, and I’m sure a lot of you do too, but can you explain why we feel so warm and welcomed with certain people and in certain places and yet deeply uncomfortable with others? I distinctly remember going to a friend’s house when I must’ve been about seven or eight and feeling so uncomfortable by the atmosphere that I wanted to run out of the house. I know someone who leaves me feeling physically drained every time I meet her as the energy surrounding her is so negative, and there are others who fill me with positivity and wellbeing.

We are all susceptible to the energy around us, which means that when we hang out with our family, friends and the people who love us their positive energy is sure to rub off on us, and the same is unfortunately true of negative energy as well. Naturally then, when you’re pregnant this is likely to affect the baby as well.

There are numerous remedies that you can use to protect yourself from negative energy, some seemingly rational, some wildly unrealistic, but it is important to stay away from people and places that drain you of your positivity and vitality. Looking at it practically, your body is working overtime to nourish and nurture the baby which leaves you drained anyway, and the last thing you need is a person or place that will exhaust you even more. Further, if you are caught in the midst of negativity, your thoughts are likely spin into a downward, depressed spiral, and this is one time when it is not only desirable but vital for you to think and feel good.

So surround yourself with ‘shiny happy people’, skip the gory bits of news, read uplifting and inspirational literature and pamper your mind, body and soul by walking on the beach at sunset, lighting a scented candle, chanting a mantra or whatever else it takes to make you feel at peace with yourself and your life to ensure that the energy surrounding you is positive, peaceful and nourishing for your baby.
